Lost or Stolen Passport: What to Do Immediately
If your passport has been lost or stolen, the first step is to report it. A lost or stolen U.S. passport should be reported to the U.S. Department of State immediately — this deactivates the old document so it cannot be misused. You can report online or by phone. Once reported, that passport is invalid even if later found, and you'll need to apply for a replacement.
If you have urgent international travel, you must apply for a new passport in person at a passport agency or acceptance facility that can accommodate emergency appointments.
Soon-to-Expire Passport: The Urgency Is Higher Than You Think
Many travelers don't realize their passport is a problem until it's nearly too late. The most common mistake: believing a passport is "fine" because it hasn't technically expired yet. But as we've written about before, many countries require six months of validity beyond your entry date — and airlines may deny boarding even if the destination country would technically admit you.
If your passport expires within the next nine months and you have or expect any international travel, the right move is to renew now, not when you've already booked.
How Fast Can a Passport Actually Be Issued?
The government offers several tiers of service:
- Routine processing: Several weeks or longer, depending on application volume and time of year. This is the standard mail-in option.
- Expedited processing: Faster than routine, still measured in weeks. An additional government fee applies.
- Life-or-death emergency: Same-day or next-day appointments at regional passport agencies for travelers with documented emergencies (medical, death in family). Proof of travel within 72 hours is typically required.
- Urgent travel within 5–14 days: Regional agency appointments are available for urgent (non-emergency) travel. These appointments can be extremely difficult to secure independently due to limited availability.
The Role of a Registered Passport Expediter
