Every U.S. passport renewal ends up at the same place — a State Department passport agency — but there are three very different ways to get it there. Renewing by mail is the classic route. Online renewal removes the paper but not the wait. Expedited service through a registered courier compresses the whole thing into days when a trip is already booked. Which one is right depends on two questions: are you eligible to renew at all, and how soon do you fly?

First, confirm you can renew rather than reapply

You can renew with Form DS-82 (by mail or online) if your most recent passport meets all of the following:

It is in your possession and undamaged.
It was issued when you were 16 or older.
It was issued within the last 15 years.
It was issued in your current name, or you can document the name change.

Option 1: Renew by mail (DS-82)

Cost: $130 for a passport book, $30 for a card, $160 for both, paid by check or money order to the U.S. Department of State (travel.state.gov, fees). No acceptance fee, because no facility is involved.

Speed: Routine service is 4–6 weeks of processing; adding the $60 expedite fee brings that to 2–3 weeks. Mail adds up to two weeks on each end (travel.state.gov, processing times). Pay $23.36 for 1–3 day return delivery to trim the back end.

Best for: travelers who are eight or more weeks from departure and comfortable putting their current passport in the mail. Write "EXPEDITE" on the envelope if you paid for it, and use a trackable service.

Option 2: Renew online

Eligible adults can renew through the State Department's online portal instead of mailing a form. You upload a digital photo, pay by card, and the department cancels your old book electronically, so you keep it. The catch most people miss: online renewal is for routine service only. You cannot pay the $60 expedite fee online, and you cannot use it if you have urgent travel. Processing follows the same 4–6 week routine window, though you save the inbound mail time.

Best for: travelers with no trip inside roughly two months who want to avoid the post office and keep their current passport in hand.

Option 3: Expedited renewal through a registered courier

Timing traps to avoid

Visas in the old book. A valid visa in a cancelled passport can often still be used alongside the new one, but rules differ by country. Carry both books and check the destination's policy before you rely on it.
Peak season. The State Department's busiest months run late winter through summer. If your renewal is optional, October through December is the quiet window.

Is renewing by mail faster than in person?

There is no true in-person renewal for eligible adults: acceptance facilities only handle DS-11 first-time applications. Eligible renewals go by mail, online, or through a registered courier. Of the three, courier submission is the fastest because it skips the mail queue entirely.

Can I expedite an online renewal?

No. The online renewal system currently offers routine service only. If you need expedited processing, renew by mail with the $60 fee or use an expediter.

Do I get my old passport back?

Yes. When you renew by mail or through a courier, the State Department cancels the old passport and usually returns it separately from the new one. Online renewals never require you to send it in.

What if my passport was damaged?
